Chad: Re-elected President Idriss Déby dies after clashes with rebels

President Idriss Déby of Chad has died of injuries sustained during clashes with rebels in the north of the country, at the weekend.

The announcement was made by the military after the provisional election results were announced and projected him for a sixth term in office. The Army has also announced that the government and parliament have been dissolved and a curfew imposed with borders shut.

Idriss Déby, dying at 68, spent more than three decades in power and will be remembered as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.

Déby “breathed his last defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield”, an army general said on state TV on Tuesday, 20th April.
