Grammys 2021: Nigerian singers, Burna Boy, Wizkid win at music awards

Nigerian singers, Burna Boy and Wizkid have both won big at the 63rd Grammy Awards.

Burna Boy won the Best Global Music Album category while Wizkid won the Best Music Video for his song with Beyoncé; Brown Skin Girl, from Lion King: The Gift album.


COVID-19: 38.7m Africans will fall into poverty – AfDB

The Africa Development Bank (AfDB) has predicted that 38.7 million Africans will fall into extreme poverty in 2021 – The Nation reports

The AfDB made this prediction at its African Economic Outlook 2021 report released Sunday, 14th March.

The report also warned that the “COVID-19 effects could reverse hard-won gains in poverty reduction over the past two decades”.


Kenya: Kenyatta bans rallies to reduce COVID-19 spread

Political gatherings and campaigns to amend parts of the 2010 Constitution in Kenya has been placed on halt for the next 60 days, President Uhuru Kenyatta said Sunday, 14th March, while announcing measures to combat the rising spread of COVID-19 – All Africa reports

The ban also includes an extended curfew for 60 days, extending those allowed in places of worship, weddings and burial at 100. Burials, he said, should be done within 72 hours after one dies.


Ethiopia: COVID-19 Vaccination begins rollout in Addis Ababa

East African country, Ethiopia has began rolling out the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to health workers on Saturday, 13th March, in the country’s capital Addis Ababa – Africa News reports

Attending the launch of the vaccine was Boureima Hama Sambo, representing The World Health Organization. Speaking, Sambo urged “communities and community leaders to build trust” as well as “demand for the vaccine” and to “promptly” address “misinformation.”


CAR: Second round of legislative poll holds amidst violence

Central African Republic (CAR) voters have cast their votes in ballots under tight security – Aljazeera Africa reports

This will be the second round of parliamentary elections after an outbreak of violence severely disrupted polls late last year.

According to the numbers, forty-nine of the National Assembly’s 140 seats are up for grabs in Sunday’s vote, after 22 members of parliament were elected outright in the first round.
