Proscovia Alengot Oromait is a Ugandan politician who served as a member of parliament (MP) for Usuk County, Katakwi District from 2011 to 2016. At age 19, she was the youngest member of parliament in Uganda; and in Africa. Alengot was brave and forged on despite critics who argued her that candidature was a big joke and that she should have been in school chasing her career instead.
- Alengot was in the 2013 class of 20 Young Power Women in Africa: the continent’s emerging power brokers, the Amazons to watch, and the custodians of tomorrow.
- She was nominated for The Future Awards Prize for African Young Person of the Year, 2014.
- She is on the 100 Most Influential Young Africans list, 2016 – released by Africa Youth Awards: recognising the exploits of young African change-makers.
- She has been known to deal with such issues related to the environment, education, health policy and gender.
- Alengot is highly reputed for her leadership qualities, tact and zeal. Having been mentored by several women including Jessica Alupo, Uganda’s former Minister of Education.
- When asked how she manages her time, she said, “Because I am a Christian, I do not booze (take alcohol). My free time is for the Bible and reading my novels…that is how my life is”.
- Alengot is, indeed, an inspiration to women and young Africans around the world.
She is relatively quiet now, but is still in the books as the youngest parliamentarian yet!
