Princess Diana remembered in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe and some of the organisations in the Southern African nation, on the eve of what would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday, are remembering her for the life and love she lived – Africa News reports

Diana, Princess of Wales, offered hope of a better future to some of the people whose lives she touched during her global travels. However, her untimely death in 1997 brought that to an end.

One such place that remembered her on Thursday 1st of July, is an old people’s home in Zimbabwe run by the Society for the Destitute Aged in Highfield Township in the capital, Harare.


Ivory Coast: Court jails 10 for Child Trafficking

An Ivory Coast on Wednesday, 30th of June, sentenced 10 people guilty of child trafficking to 10 years in jail – Reuters Africa reports

The verdict is part of efforts to clamp down on organised networks that smuggle children to work in cocoa plantations.

Ivory Coast is the world’s top cocoa producer with the companies that buy its cocoa facing international pressure to tackle child labour and put measures in place to guarantee sustainable farming.

Burkina Faso: President takes over ministry of defence

Roch Kabore, Burkina Faso’s president has taken over the ministry of Defence and taken the position of Defence minister in a cabinet reshuffle – News Central Africa reports

The cabinet reshuffle was geared toward stopping a wave of insurgency that has plagued the West Africa nation in recent times.

In early reports, Al Qaeda-backed groups mostly from neighbouring Mali embedded themselves throughout the northern part of the country launching assaults on civilians.


Over 5.5 million COVID-19 cases confirmed across Africa

As of July 1, confirmed cases of Covid-19 from 55 African countries reached 5,504,801 while over 34,845,605 vaccinations have been administered across the continent – All Africa reports

Reported deaths in Africa reached 142,948 and 4,815,162 people have recovered. South Africa has the most reported cases 1,973,972 and 60,647 people died. Other most-affected countries are Morocco (531,361), Tunisia (420,103), Egypt (281,031), Ethiopia (276,174), Libya (193,474) and Kenya (184,161).
