South Africa: ANC names new Secretary-General

South Africa’s ruling party, African National Congress (ANC), has appointed Jessie Duarte as its new secretary-general, after Ace Magashule was suspended on Thursday, 6th May on charges of corruption – Africa News reports

The update was disclosed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday, 10th May.

Elias Magashule, nicknamed “Ace”, 61, was last week, named as the first senior party official to be temporarily sidelined in the wake of the party’s new anti-corruption policy – a victory for Cyril Ramaphosa, who has vowed to eradicate corruption.


Congo: Islamist militia kills Malawian peacekeeper

A female peacekeeper from Malawi was murdered in an attack by Islamist militia in eastern Congo’s North Kivu province in the morning of Monday 10th May – Reuters Africa reports

The update was disclosed by the United Nations and the Malawian government.

However, a local civil rights group disclosed separately that fighters with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an Islamist armed group with Ugandan origins, had attacked the village of Kilia, around 18km southeast of Beni in the province, killing at least five people. It was not clear if that figure included the peacekeeper.


Algeria to ban unauthorised protests

North African country, Algeria will ban unauthorised protest in the country in plans to bring to an end a years-long protest movement seeking democratic reforms – Aljazeera Africa reports

The announcement came on Sunday, 9th May, as protests by the Hirak movement gained momentum in recent weeks after a months-long hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic.


Ghanaians hold anti-government protest virtually

Ghanaians through the weekend organised an online protest seeking for reforms in the country by their political leaders – News Central Africa reports

The protest was first to be held on the streets of the capital Accra but the police secured a court order to restrain organizers.

Protesters then took to social media and various other platforms to share pictures of themselves holding placards with inscriptions of what they want the government to fix in the country with the hashtag #FixMotherGhana and #FixTheCountry among others.


COVID-19 Updates

As of May 10, confirmed cases of Covid-19 from 55 African countries reached 4,632,506 while over 13,443,942 vaccinations have been administered across the continent – All Africa reports

Reported deaths in Africa reached 124,394 and 4,148,673 people have recovered. South Africa has the most reported cases –  1,596,595 – and 54,735 people died. Other most-affected countries are Morocco (513,864), Tunisia (320,813), Ethiopia ( 262,702), Egypt ( 237,410), Libya (179,970) and Nigeria ( 165,419).
