The Weeknd donates $1 million to fund relief work in Ethiopia

Popular Canadian singer, The Weeknd has pledged to donate $1 million to fund humanitarian work in Ethiopia – Africa News reports

The singer also called on his fans to follow him in his gesture of solidarity. “My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction,” he wrote on Instagram on Sunday.

Sudan declares emergency as 40 killed in Darfur

Sudan has declared a state of emergency in Darfur following brutal ethnic clashes that have left at least 40 people dead and thousands of others displaced – BBC Africa reports

On Monday, 5th April, the UN said that at least 40 people had been killed and more than 50 injured after violence broke out on Saturday, 3rd April, between Arab groups and the non-Arab Massalit ethnic community in the city of El Geneina.


Mozambique: Palma town now secure

Palma, the town in northern Mozambique that ISIL (ISIS)-linked fighters attacked late last month is now secure after military intervention – Aljazeera Africa reports

Chongo Vidigal, leader of military operations to regain control of Palma, told local television TVM, on Monday, 5th April, that the area was now “safe”


Continent approaches 7.5 million COVID-19 Vaccinations

As of April 5, confirmed cases of Covid-19 from 55 African countries reached  4,269,206 while over 7,488,208 vaccinations have been administered across the continent – All Africa reports

Reported deaths in Africa reached  113,853 and   3,838,648 people have recovered. South Africa has the most reported cases –   1,551,964 – and  52,987 people died. Other most-affected countries are Morocco ( 498,197 ), Tunisia ( 260,044 ), Ethiopia ( 215,189 ), Egypt ( 204,965 ) and Nigeria ( 163,195 ).
