Another high ranking government official has died from COVID in Africa. Zimbabwe’s foreign minister, Sibusiso Moyo, on Wednesday, 20 January 2021 died at a local hospital after battling COVID-19 complications.

Government spokesman George Charamba attributed the minister’s cause of death to the virus. In a statement, George described Moyo as “a man who fought tirelessly for a better Zimbabwe.”

2. Uganda: Bobi Wine Files Arbitrary Detention Complaint

Presidential candidate of the National Unity Platform, NUP in the Uganda election, Robert Kyagulanyi a.k.a Bobi Wine, has filed an arbitrary detention complaint to the United Nations, UN.

Since Friday, 15 January 2021, The Ugandan Military has surrounded Bobi Wine’s house, a day after the country conducted the presidential elections.

3. Congo is not burning down – UN Mission Head

Leïla Zerrougui, Head of the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a press conference in Kinshasa, stated that conflict in the country is still being contained well.

The conference which held Wednesday, 20 January 2021 will be her last press conference in Kinshasa as she prepares to hand over after three years.

4. Lagos Tests 285,948 COVID-19 Samples in Nigeria

Authorities in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, has stated that no fewer than 285, 948 samples have been tested for the coronavirus (COVID-19) disease since inception.

The State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, on Wednesday, 20 January 2021 made the disclosure through his verified Twitter account @ProfAkinAbayomi, while giving the state’s COVID-19 update. The commissioner said that 285,948 total samples were tested, out of which 263,358 were valid.

5. Kenya prepares for COVID-19 vaccine roll-out

UK’s First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Dominic Raab, says Britain will help Kenya in preparation for rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine from next month.

Kenya’s Minister of Health, Mutahi Kagwe, had earlier revealed that the country ordered 24 million doses of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.
