Ethiopia holds anti-US rally over Tigray
Thousands of people in Ethiopia are protesting in an anti-US rally in the capital Addis Ababa, criticising President Joe Biden’s policy on the conflict in the country’s northern region of Tigray – Africa News reports
Earlier in the week, US President Joe Biden called for a ceasefire in the conflict, which has stretched for seven months. He also imposed restrictions on visas and economic assistance in the Tigray region. However, protesters say they are meddling.
“I came out today to oppose the idea of foreign countries trying to interfere in our domestic affairs and babysit us. We are a sovereign country,” said demonstrator Abera Tesfaye.
Senegal wins Africa Beach Soccer competition 2021
The lions of Senegal have retained their crown in the 2021 African Beach Soccer Cup of Nations. The hosts played against Mozambique on Saturday in their home city of Saly – Africa News reports
Raoul Mendy and his team showed Mozambique and reminded the rest of Africa that they are indeed the kings of African Beach Soccer. Senegal won without trembling the 10th edition of the CAF with a 4-1 victory and their third successive title.
“Thank goodness we worked hard to achieve our goal,” said Senegal’s goalkeeper Seyni Ndiaye.
Zimbabwe launches Africa Day of School Feeding Programme
Zimbabwe has kickstarted the Africa Day Feeding Programme in schools throughout the country – News Central Africa reports
Philemon Musakanya The Ministry Provincial Education Director, disclosed this during a launch ceremony held at Harare Central Prison School. According to him, the programme complements First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa’s efforts aimed at preserving African Culture and heritage through feeding.
Macron threatens to withdraw French troops from Mali
French President Emmanuel Macron has threatened that France would withdraw troops from Mali if political instability there leads to greater Islamist radicalisation – BBC Africa reports
The announcement is following a second coup in nine months in the West African nation. The president warned of the risk of Mali “moving towards” greater Islamist influence.
More than 23.1 million people vaccinated across Africa
As of May 30, confirmed cases of Covid-19 from 55 African countries reached 4,821,436 while over 23,109,877 vaccinations have been administered across the continent – All Africa reports
Reported deaths in Africa reached 130,120 and 4,355,268 people have recovered. South Africa has the most reported cases – 1,659,070 – and 56,363 people died. Other most-affected countries are Morocco ( 518,868 ), Tunisia ( 343,374 ), Ethiopia ( 271,200 ), Egypt ( 260,659 ), Libya ( 185,181 ) and Kenya ( 170,485 ).
